RiP Paddy McGuinness
Controversial columnist and former Quadrant editor Padraic ‘Paddy' McGuinness has died in his Sydney home after a battle with cancer. He was 69.
First coming to prominence as a student activist, McGuinness wrote opinion pieces for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Australian and was a former editor of The Australian Financial Review.
Current Quadrant editor Keith Windschuttle paid tribute to McGuinness's ‘strong eye for cant, humbug, hypocrisy and people who clothed the incoherence of their ideas in obfuscatory language.'
RiP Hone Tuwhere
Maori poet Hone Tuwhere has died in Dublin, aged 86.
The former Te Mata Poet Laureate, who won Montana NZ Book Awards in 1998 and 2002, was best known for his first published collection, No Ordinary Sun.
New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark paid tribute to the ‘distinguished poet, playwright, and writer of short fiction.'
‘His poetry contained powerful imagery of our land, sea and legends, and often expressed strong views on contemporary issues,' Clark said. ‘Hone's death will be felt deeply by all who valued his lifetime contribution to New Zealand literature.'
RiP Edward D Hoch
Crime writer Edward D Hoch has died of a heart attack in his New York home. He was 77.
The famously prolific author published more than 900 mystery stories in a range of periodicals, not missing an issue of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine for 35 years.
He was named a ‘Grand Master' by the Mystery Writers of America in 2001.
