Judges Kerryn Goldworthy, Paul Hetherington and Peter Rose declared that it would be 'unfair to separate' Reaching One Thousand, Robertson's 'impressively subtle' study of autism, from A Storm and a Teacup, Tredinnick's look at the sustainability of life in 'the driest continent'. The essayists will share $10,000. There were 127 entries for this year's prize, a joint initiative of Australian Book Review (ABR) and the Copyright Agency Limited (CAL).
