The winners of this year's Le Cordon Bleu World Food Media Awards were announced last week in Adelaide as part of the annual Tasting Australia festival.
Among the winners of ‘gold ladles' were UK-based Australian chef Skye Gyngell for best food book with A Year in My Kitchen (Quadrille), Stephanie Alexander was a joint winner of the best children's food book with Kitchen Garden Cooking with Kids (Penguin) and James Halliday won best wine book for James Halliday's Wine Atlas of Australia (Hardie Grant).
Winners were selected by an international panel of 80 jurors from a field of more than 600 entries, predominantly coming from the UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Belgium and Australia. Commenting on the competition, jury chairman Ian Parmenter said: ‘This is the tenth year of competition, which has seen more than 4000 entries. We're delighted that once again the standard of entries was extremely high.'
In addition to Le Cordon Bleu gold ladles, two individuals, well known to the food and drink industry, were honoured for their outstanding achievements in the industry. British chef, restaurateur, TV presenter and writer Rick Stein was inducted into the Tasting Australia International Hall of Fame, while UK-born Australian cheese guru, writer and TV presenter Will Studd was the Australian inductee.
The book category winners are:
- Best children's cookbook (two Winners): Kitchen Garden Cooking with Kids (Stephanie Alexander, Lantern) and Nora's Dinners (Nora Sands, Harper Collins)
- Best health and nutrition book: The CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet, Book 2 (Manny Noakes & Peter Clifton, Penguin)
- Best professional cookery book: Chocolate Decorations (Jean-Pierre Wybauw, Lannoo Publishers, Belgium)
- Best drink guide book: The Penguin Good Australian Wine Guide 2007 (Huon Hooke & Ralph Kyte-Powell, Penguin)
- Best food guide book: Real Flavours (Glynn Christian, Hardie Grant)
- Best wine book: James Halliday's Wine Atlas of Australia (James Halliday, Hardie Grant)
- Best softcover recipe book (RRP under US$30): Taking Tea in the Medina (Julie Le Clerc, Penguin)
- Best softcover recipe book (RRP over US$30): Piano, Piano, Pieno (Susan McKenna Grant, Harper Collins Canada)
- Best hardcover recipe book (RRP under US$30): Danks Street Depot (Jared Ingersoll, Murdoch)
- Best hardcover recipe book (RRP over US$30): Soul of a New Cuisine (Marcus Samuelsson, Wiley)
- Best food book: A Year in my Kitchen (Skye Gyngell, Quadrille).
