The winner of the 2007 Iremonger award for writing on public issues was announced in December.
The winning manuscript proposal is Once Were Radicals by Irfan Yusuf. The award carries prizemoney of $10,000, guaranteed publication by Allen & Unwin, royalties on sales and editorial support to develop the proposal into a finished manuscript.
Once Were Radicals is described as ‘the story of a young Australian Muslim's engagement with political Islam and his search for balance within layers of his personal identity.'
For the first time, the judges also announced a runner-up: Eight Streets: Two Years in Aurukun by Paula Shaw.
