Audio Book: A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Grim Grotto, read by Tim Curry

The mystery and quirkiness that has made the print version of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ so successful has been lovingly recreated and enhanced in this compact disc version of the 11th book. There is a lot to like about a dust jacket that warns you not to listen to the audio book, as the contents are both horrible and distressing. Those brave enough to place the CD into their stereo will be comforted to know that the intricacies of phenomenon known as the ‘Water Cycle’ have been carefully catalogued by Mr Snicket, so as to not delve into the despair of the Baudelaire orphans too early in the narrative.

A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Grim Grotto (Lemony Snicket, read by Tim Curry, HarperCollins, $27.95 6xCDs, ISBN 0060579471) ****

Some may even pluck the courage to place the disk into their personal computer where photos from the Snicket archives, the art from the Helquist gallery, or perplexing word games may help in lightening the mood after listening to plight of the orphans. Tim Curry is beautifully cast as narrator for this tale and delivers the dry humour and descriptive details with a measured pace and delicious intonation. The bookmarking is appropriately spaced and makes for accessible listening either at home or in the car. This American production is the complete package, well-presented and consistent with the design style of its print cousin.
