Kicking goals

The allure of football (by which this southern writer means Aussie Rules of course!) may be entirely mysterious to many of us, but it seems that football publishing = sales. With this in mind (and the fact that these books have lots of appeal for reluctant, often boy, readers) Geoff Slattery Publishing and Penguin each have a new book for the footy fanatic.

Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico is well known to many as the face of Melbourne’s Dimmey’s department store and one of Hawthorn Football Club’s leading players during that club’s glory days in the 1980s. Now Dipper has a book out: Dipper’s Fabulous Fantastic Footy Fun (& Fact) Book. It’s chock-a-block with facts, puzzles, jokes, trivia and even some recipes. With bright, colourful design and lots of photos and drawings on every page it’s an action-packed book for existing or wannabe footy fans.

Specky Magee, the creation of writer Felice Arena and former Melbourne Football Club player Garry Lyon, is into his fourth book—Specky Magee and the Boots of Glory (Puffin, April). This time around Specky has accepted a sport scholarship to the prestigious Gosmore Grammar and settling in to the new school is not proving to be easy. With lots of action on and off the field, new and established Specky fans will be flooding bookstores for this one.
